"PEACE" Coach Jacket
"PEACE" Coach Jacket
This coach jacket is part of the merch collection for issue 5 of our “Find Peace. Keep Peace.” publication. Read the origin story from our founder, Lorenzo Diggins Jr., below.
My great-grandfather, Alex Peal, was a dynamic man. He passed away in 1991, and I was the only one of my siblings to have met him. Throughout my life, my Mom and Nana (my great-grandmother) have always compared me to him as courageous and unafraid to take a stand for my beliefs. This picture of him leading a neighborhood protest against drugs in 1989 is an excellent representation of him as a man.
For years, I’ve had this image displayed on an altar in my home as a silent reminder to “stay on my path.” It wasn’t until a couple of years ago, while reflecting on my journey, that I noticed the similarities in our mission, and PEACE was at the forefront. As a way to honor my great-grandfather and connect us, I started creating artwork that incorporated him, and this collage that I created for issue 3 was the first result of our little collaboration.
Though it makes perfect sense for us to make merch that says “PEACE,” the inspiration comes from the source: it’s a reimagining of what the great Alex Peal was wearing in 1989 as he protested for “PEACE.” Enjoy.
